Centers in the Intermediate Grades

I have been contemplating trying literacy centers in my classroom. However, I have never seen this modeled in an intermediate classroom before. Over the weekend, I purchased two books on amazon that I hope will help me pave the way.

I think centers might be the answer for me to get through all the material I need to in one week. Knowing my students and how they operate, I really feel like they'll respond to this. I know the major battle will be behavior management.

My hope is to find time over Thanksgiving break to get my plan in place and implement centers soon after in my class.

Does anyone have any tips or words of enlightenment that could benefit this endeavor? :)

  1. I'd be glad to help out in the room keeping students on task with the centers.

Images of a grammar center (manipulatives for putting the parts of speech together), writing centers (private areas of the room and a surprise bag of objects to spark the imagination), reading center (recording area, plus summarizing materials), and RLAC center (syllabication and blending exercises) comes to mind.

  2. I got my books in the mail today! The one is called "Practice with Purpose: Literacy Work Stations for Grades 3-6." It describes what work stations are and how they should operate. It gives management ideas and then goes into details about specific work stations. These includ guided reading, independent reading, response writing and writing, word study, poetry work, content area, and easy-to-set-up stations.
My other book has 18 pre-made literacy centers that can be done independently. I am thinking about using these as one of the centers in my room each week. I already have the materials cut out. I just need to laminate (need to find someplace cheap!).
I am excited to get centers up and running in my classroom. I love trying new things! But first I have LOTS of reading and prep work to do :)

  3. I am eager to take a look at those new books of yours and listen to your ideas for the upcoming weeks. We need to find time to get together.
